Chapter 15

Laura’s prediction had been quite accurate. Her wedding day was a very long day, indeed. But a very long, lovely day. Much more beautiful than she would have imagined while she was still back in Vermont, writing letters to a man she knew very little about.

The church ladies had outdone themselves. Wildflowers and sunflowers decorated every pew, and a larger arrangement overflowed the altar table. Everyone had brought a dish to share after the ceremony, and the parson had donated five watermelons, picked from his watermelon patch that morning.

Rebecca had rushed up to Laura right before the ceremony and enveloped her in a huge hug. “How are you doin’, darlin’?” she asked, pulling away to search Laura’s eyes.

Laura’s heart calmed at the woman’s embrace. She had been missing her mother so much, especially today. “I’m better now,” she whispered. “I’ll be glad to get this part over with.”

“That’s right. This part is the seed of the plant. Tomorrow, and the next day, and the next day are when you start the livin’ and growin’ part. Puttin’ down strong roots.” She hugged Laura to her again quickly, then slipped something soft into Laura’s hand. “God bless you and Jake,” she said.

Laura looked down and opened her fingers to see a blue handkerchief. It was embroidered with flowers around the edges, and inside the flowers were neatly stitched words: “All shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.”

She clasped the handkerchief to her chest. If only it could be so. God, please make it be so. Realizing this was the closest thing to prayer she’d said in a long time, she took a deep breath and looked back at Rebecca.

“It’s your something blue,” she smiled.

Laura smiled. “Thank you. I needed this today.”

“Now get on your way. You’re the star of the show and a certain handsome man is waiting on you.”

“Indeed.”

Laura reached out and squeezed Rebecca’s hand. Then she turned and walked slowly to the door that opened into the main meeting room. She would walk down the aisle to Jake from here.

He stood waiting for her at the altar, his face glowing. Laura took a deep breath and started down the aisle. She was going to marry this man and pledge her life to him forever. She prayed he would forgive her.
